In Cœur de Flandre
Cœur de Flandre is not only estaminets, windmills, giants, museums and churches as described in our accommodation column. There are also many other leisure activities to discover in this rich territory.
Outdoor activities
|
Whether one prefers walking, hiking, horse riding, cycling, or canoeing there are all kinds of excursions, which covers hundreds of kilometers between the valleys of Lys and Yser, the hills of Flanders, the forests, the plains and the marshes.
At Armentières, on 120 hectares, the Prés du Hem Leisure Park with its lake of 44 hectares, offers all sorts of fun and entertainment such as swimming, pedal boats, pleasure boats, sailing, mini-golf, a bird sanctuary, and a miniature train. |

|
On the shores of the Lys river, to appreciate the varieties of flowers, plants, birds and insects, many guided tours are organized for the interested of
botany.
The best way to enjoy the countryside however, is from up above, by hot air balloons. Depending on the seasons and on the winds, this original way to discover the landscape is unforgettable. The fields become a colorful palette, green during the hop harvest, yellow during the blossoming of coleseed, and red while the poppies flower.
The tradional games
|
The fun loving people of the Flanders, enjoy to this day their traditional games.
Some of these games such as the putbak (throwing pucks in a
frog) are played in the estaminets while others, are outdoor games like the plattebollen
(bowls).
Another age-old game is the vertical archery, which in the 13th century was practiced for defense
purposes. The aim of the game is to knock down targets fixed on a pole.
