In the heart of the Alps...
On an altitude of 270m, Chambéry enjoys an exceptional environment and a remarkable geographic situation, in the heart of the Bauges mountains, of the Chartreuse region. Close to the most famoust ski resorts in the Alps , it is also near the Vanoise mountains and of the biggest natural lake of France, the lac du Bourget.
Located in the middle of the roads that connect France to Italy and Switzerland to the Mediteranean, Chambéry is the Alpine crossroad of Europe, combining the traditional and the modern.

Ancient capital of Ducs de Savoie, Chambéry is a town of Arts and history with landmarks such as the "Château des Ducs de Savoie", the "Sainte-Chapelle", the "Grand Carillon" (Stradivarius des Carillons) which with its 70 bells is the biggest one in Europe, and one of the 4 most beautiful ones in Europe.
Amongst the original features of this town is the Elephants Fountain.
Chambéry is also famous for its Trompe-l'œil paintings. They cover an area of 6000m2 between facades, stairways, theatres, chappels, etc...

Visitors of Chambéry in March 2001, can see:
"Printemps des Musees" (Spring of Museums) such as: Musée des Beaux-Arts, Musée Savoisien, Musée des Charmettes (One of the country houses of Jean Jacques Rousseau).
Tremplin de la chanson (8 to 23 March) a song contest.
The second-hand car sales (24 to 27 March).
For the music lovers, the concert of the Grand Carillon, every Saturday at 10:30.
And finally between April and October, a small train takes visitors around for a guided tour of the town.
Accommodation can be found in one of the 1500 rooms available amongst the hotels (from 1 star to 4 stars) in Chambéry. If we add the nearby towns of Aix-les-Bains et Challes-les-Eaux, the number of rooms can increase to 4000.
Amongst the gastronomic specialities of the Savoie are the Fondue, the Raclette, the Tartiflette, the "farçons" and the fish of the lakes.
Amongst the drinks, the Chamberyzette (Dry Vermouth), the Bonal (An apéritif), the Genepi (a liquor).
The sweets include the bonbon Mazet ( round caramel), bouchon d'Apremont (dark chocolate with liquor), Caraque (Dark chocolate), Flocon de neige, Truffe au chocolat, the Biscuit Savoie, the Matafan aux pommes (Apple cake), and the "Saint-Genix" (Gâteau prâliné).
